NEW REASONABLE RATES FOR POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENTS
March 11, 2019
Republic Act No. 11207 (“RA 11207”) amends Sec. 11 of RA 9006, otherwise known as the “Fair Election Act.”
Sec. 11 of RA 9006 talks about the rates of political advertising, publicity, announcements and other similar propaganda.
RA 11207 directs media outlets to give registered political parties and bona fide candidates the following updated discount rates from the average of the published rates charged in the last 3 calendar years prior to the election:
50% for television
40% for radio
10% for print
Media outlets are not prohibited from giving higher discount rates, provided that the discount it gives to one candidate shall be the same discount it gives to other candidates for the same position.
Also, the rates charged to registered political parties and bona fide candidates shall not be higher than the rates charged to non-political advertisers.
The previous discount rates, as provided by the original provision of Sec. 11 of RA 9006, were:
30% for television
20% for radio
10% for print
